Create your own custom ring!
In this 3 hour workshop you will learn the basics of 3D computer modeling by following the instructors detailed step-by-step instructions to create your own custom ring design. Then your own custom ring design will be printed (in a color of your choice) on one of the 3D printers at Metrix. (3D printed ring included in cost of workshop)
Learn to create objects on a 3D printer with free software!
The workshop will guide you through the installation and use of FreeCAD, an open source (and free to download) 3D computer modeling package. Instruction will focus on FreeCAD’s part design mode in which 2D sketches with constraints are used to generate 3D forms.
Special attention will be paid to the constraints of fused deposition modeling style 3D printers (such as the MakerBot). You will learn about minimum feature sizes, delamination, overhangs and more.
You will learn the full toolchain to go from an idea to a physical object. The workshop will cover exporting an STL file from FreeCAD, inspecting the file and fixing errors in MeshLab and MeshMixer, support generation, slicing, and more.
Use robots to build more robots!
Although this workshop will focus on one particular technology -- fused deposition modeling -- you will learn about the wide range of robotic fabrication tools (many of which are at Metrix) that can be harnessed to create jewelry, mechanisms, and even other robots!
